Installation is the job with no old heater to copy: a first water heater in a new home, a move out of the attic, a second heater for a big household, or a switch in type. Tell us what you're planning and you'll get a call right back to settle size, fuel and location. You'll get a price before any work starts, with the permit on it.

When do you need an installation instead of a swap?

A swap reuses the old lines. An installation means someone has to plan new ones, and that changes the price and the permit.

  • New construction or an addition: a first water heater, sized from scratch.
  • A remodel: a bathroom or kitchen moving, or a soaking tub that outgrows the old tank.
  • Relocation: the heater leaving the attic or a cramped closet for the garage.
  • A second heater: a far wing of a large house that waits forever for hot water.
  • A type or fuel change: tank to tankless, or electric to gas.

Each of these raises questions a swap never does: where the lines run, how the heater vents, and whether the panel or gas meter can carry the load. Those answers set the price.

If you simply need the old tank swapped for a new one in the same spot, water heater replacement is the page for you.

How do you choose the right size?

Gallons are what everyone quotes, but the First Hour Rating on the yellow label is the figure to match. It tells you how much hot water the tank delivers in its busiest hour.

  • 1 to 2 people: 30 to 40 gallons.
  • 2 to 4 people: 40 to 50 gallons.
  • 4 to 5 people: 50 to 55 gallons.
  • More than 5: 75 gallons, or a tankless water heater sized by flow.

Those are Rheem's sizing figures (opens in a new tab). Very hard water eats capacity as sediment settles, and a soaking tub draws far more than a shower, so the next size up is often worth pricing.

How does moving a water heater out of the attic work?

It's the most common installation request from an existing home. In Texas generally, attics became a popular spot over the last 50 years, and garages dominate in homes built over the last 30.

An attic tank that fails sends water through the ceiling, which is why so many owners move it. A move is priced as a new install: new hot and cold lines, a gas branch or a circuit, a vent for gas, and a pan draining outside. Where the garage can't work, a code-correct pan and drain line on the attic heater is the fallback.

Which fuel, permit and code rules apply in New Braunfels?

Local rules decide what an install needs. These are the three to know before anything is priced.

  • Fuel: CenterPoint provides natural gas to many parts of the city, but not all of it. Check for a gas meter before planning a gas water heater; the gas vs electric and sizing guide shows how.
  • Permit: the City requires one (opens in a new tab) to install, alter or convert any plumbing, gas or electrical system. The fee isn't published, so ask for it as a line item.
  • Efficiency: in an all-electric home, a heat-pump water heater is worth pricing; ENERGY STAR models (opens in a new tab) carry a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of 3.3 to 4.1, the rating U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has used since 2017.
  • Code: the City adopted the 2021 International Plumbing Code, whose section 607.3 covers the expansion tank and whose sections 504.7 and 504.6 (opens in a new tab) cover the drain pan and the relief-valve line.

Elevation doesn't change anything here. At about 620 feet, the city sits well below the 2,000 feet that gas heaters are built for.

What an installation includes

A first-time install carries more line items than a swap. A complete estimate names each one.

  • The heater, sized by First Hour Rating or, for tankless, by flow
  • Water lines, shutoff valves and connectors to the new spot
  • A gas branch with a shutoff, or a dedicated circuit for electric
  • A vent to the outside and combustion air, for gas water heaters
  • An expansion tank on a closed system, and a pan where a leak would do damage
  • The City permit, shown as its own line

Ask for the license number while you're comparing. Board rule 367.10 puts the Responsible Master Plumber's number, which starts with M, on written estimates.

What does water heater installation cost?

A standard tank runs about $1,000–$3,400 installed, and a first-time install tends to land in the upper half. The heater is only part of it; the new gas, vent or electrical work is what moves the number.

Getting an installation priced, anywhere in town

Call or text (830) 243-5644 any hour, or send the quote form, and say what you're installing and where. You'll get a call right back to cover size, fuel and the route for lines and venting. Then you'll get a price before any work starts, so the plan is clear before a wall is opened.

Have a few details ready: how many people live in the home, the fuel you plan to use, and where the heater should go. For a new build, the plan sheet showing the utility space helps.

First-time installs come mostly from new-build areas: Veramendi off Loop 337, Mayfair along Kohlenberg Road, Meyer Ranch on Highway 46, the KB Home sections of Legend Point, the Overlook at Creekside near FM 306, and Solms Landing. Older homes call for attic moves and remodels too, so get your price wherever you are in 78130, 78132 or 78133.

Questions homeowners ask

What is the difference between water heater installation and replacement?

A replacement puts a new tank where the old one stood, on the same lines. An installation involves new work: a first-time water heater, a move to a new spot, a second heater, or a change of type or fuel.

How big should a first water heater be for a new home?

Rheem's guidance is 30 to 40 gallons for 1 or 2 people, 40 to 50 for 2 to 4, 50 to 55 for 4 or 5, and 75 gallons or tankless for larger households. The First Hour Rating on the label is the better number to match.

Can a water heater be moved out of the attic?

Usually, if the garage or a utility space has a route for the water lines, the fuel supply and, for gas, a vent. A move is priced as a new installation because it involves new piping.

Do I need a permit for a water heater installation in New Braunfels?

Yes. The City requires a permit to install or alter any plumbing, gas or mechanical system, and stand-alone plumbing permits can be filed through its online portal. The fee isn't published, so it belongs on the estimate.

What does a first-time water heater installation cost?

A standard tank typically runs about $1,000 to $3,400 installed, and a tankless water heater about $1,600 to $4,500. A first-time install lands toward the top because of new gas, vent or electrical work.

Does a new water heater need a drain pan?

Yes, wherever a leak would damage the home, such as an attic, a closet or living space, under 2021 International Plumbing Code section 504.7. The pan must be at least 1.5 inches deep with a drain of at least 0.75 inch.
